Privacy Policy

With cactus-search you can search and surf the Internet privately. Not because you have anything to hide, but because you have a lot to protect!

Protecting your privacy is about being in control of your data. At cactus-search.com, we help you control and protect what's yours:

Why we don't collect "personal information"

If information is not collected, it cannot be stolen, solicited, shared, or misused.

How do we define "personal information"?

Our definition of personal data is based on EU data protection laws and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These are widely regarded as the strongest privacy protections in the world. We consider any information about you or your behavior that can be traced back to you to be personal data.

Information we do not collect. So let's be very clear about this:

We do not record your IP address.

The only exception is automated search queries (robots), which quickly send more queries to our servers than any normal human. When our software detects potential abuse, we record and block the offending IP address to keep our service safe and free.

We do not use cookies for tracking or identification purposes.

This is about "good" and "bad". Cookies . Cookies are small pieces of data sent to your hard drive by the websites you visit. "bad" Cookies have unique elements that can track all kinds of personal information. We do not operate any of these elements. The home page uses only one "good" Cookie called "preferences" to store the search preferences you choose. It is completely anonymous and expires if you have not visited the home page for 90 days.

We do not record your search queries

When you perform a search, unnecessary metadata such as your IP address and other identifying information is automatically removed from your query. We send the anonymized search query to Google and return the search results to you. We do not log your search queries.

To prevent abuse such as large-scale robotic queries, we anonymously determine the frequency of popular search terms as part of our anti-abuse measures while protecting your privacy.

How we implemented truly anonymous analytics

We measure total traffic numbers and some other - strictly anonymous - statistics. These statistics may include the number of times our service is accessed by a particular operating system, browser type, language, etc., but we know nothing about individual users.

How we keep cactus-search.com free without using "personal data"

Most of today's online advertising is personalized, meaning online advertising services track what you do online and profile you to serve tailored ads. On the home page, we don't do that. No tracking. No profiling!

Our search results pages may contain a small number of clearly labeled "sponsored links" that generate revenue and cover our operating costs. These links are pulled from platforms such as Google AdSense. To help prevent click fraud, some non-identifying system information is shared. However, because we never share personal data or information that could uniquely identify you, the ads we serve are not associated with any individual user.

It's a myth that search engines need to profile you to make decent money. The home page is solely for non-personalized ads. Sure, our ads make a fraction of what other search engine ads make, but they pay all our bills.

We protect you on our website - and beyond

This privacy policy only applies to the cactus-search.com. website

Once you click on a search result, you leave our website and our privacy policy. This applies to sponsored links, search results and other external links. Unless ... You use our "Anonymous View" feature, which is displayed next to the search results. This is a great privacy tool that allows you to continue browsing in full privacy.

Home page video search results are provided by YouTube API services in full privacy. When you click on video links, you will be redirected to YouTube and will be subject to YouTube's terms of use and Google's privacy policy.

We do not share or sell your contact information.

If you contact us by email or through our support center, we will use your contact information to respond to you. We will not sell or share this information with anyone. You have the option to subscribe to our newsletter, from which you can unsubscribe at any time.

How we respond to government data requests

Every request must come from the Dutch judicial authorities. We will only comply if we are legally obliged to do so. But it is unlikely that we will receive requests from governments to hand over user data - simply because we don't have any.

We will never comply with a voluntary monitoring program.

Hell no! Fortunately, we are based in the EU where we have strong laws that protect your right to privacy. European governments cannot legally force service providers like cactus-search to implement a blanket spying program.

Cactus-search complies with GDPR

We are based in the EU and fully comply with applicable EU data protection laws and regulations, including the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). These are widely considered to be the strongest data protection regulations in the world.

Looking for a quick win to improve your own GDPR compliance? Setting the home page as the default search engine on all of your organization's IT devices will help you minimize the amount of personal data processed by or for your organization. This can also help you implement important privacy principles such as data minimization, storage limitation, privacy by design, and privacy by default.

In the EU, you have a "right to be forgotten".

Citizens in the EU have the right to request the deletion of search results that reveal their personal information if those results are inaccurate or no longer relevant.
